The facts
U.S. District Judge George O'Toole in Boston issued a ruling on Monday, granting preliminary relief to plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit. The judge found that the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) process for imposing fines violated federal law and could push migrants into insolvency. O'Toole noted that plaintiffs, like one named Nancy M. who was fined over $1.8 million, work low-wage jobs and face potential garnishment of wages, loss of property, and lawsuits. The judge also ruled that the administration's fine notices violated the Administrative Procedure Act by failing to provide specific allegations. DHS had stated it issued over 103,000 fines totaling about $84 billion since January 2025, with daily penalties of $998 for those refusing to leave after a final order of removal, retroactively applied for up to five years. The administration had also streamlined the fine assessment process, which O'Toole found lacked public comment. Senators Alex Padilla and Dick Durbin had previously urged DHS and the Department of Justice to pause the application of these civil penalties.
Our take
Well, well, well. Look who just got their shitty, extortionate little racket slapped down by a grown-up in a robe. The Trump administration, in its infinite fucking wisdom, decided the best way to handle immigration was to become the world's pettiest collection agency. They were trying to fine destitute migrants nearly two million bucks apiece for not magically vanishing. What a galaxy-brained policy from a cadre of absolute cunts who think cruelty is a substitute for competence. Let's garnish the wages of a dishwasher! Let's sue a day laborer for a cool $1.8 million! It's like watching a toddler try to run a mob loan operation, if the toddler was also a vindictive prick. Of course the process was illegal. They didn't bother with specifics, public comment, or, you know, basic fucking humanity - just sent out over a hundred thousand bills totaling $84 billion because why the fuck not? They streamlined the shakedown! That's administrative innovation for you: finding new, faster ways to be complete assholes. The judge pointed out this brilliant scheme would just push people into insolvency. No shit, Sherlock. That was the fucking point, you bureaucratic dickheads. The goal was never to collect - it was to terrorize. It's the legal equivalent of taking a piss on someone's shoes and then sending them an invoice for the 'cleaning fee.' Thankfully, a judge with more brains than the entire DHS press office looked at this vindictive bullshit and said, 'Nah.' Pack it up, clowns. Your debtors' prison fantasy is on hold. Now go back to drawing your stupid maps with Sharpies and leave the law to people who can read it without drooling on the page. Fucking amateurs. End of story. Fuck off and die. Next case.
