The facts
On Oct. 1, about 2,000 people drew an overflow audience at the Skylight Hangar at the Sun 'n Fun Expo Campus in Lakeland for a midterm election rally, with speeches by governor candidate Byron Donalds, U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody, U.S. Rep. Scott Franklin, R-Lakeland, and Vice President JD Vance.
During Vance's keynote speech early in the afternoon, Ben Braver, 24, of Tampa, a Democratic candidate for the Florida House in District 65, which covers south and west Tampa, rose from his seat and loudly addressed the vice president while recording himself with a phone held on a pole. He was heard calling out, "Thank you so much, Vice President Vance, for the gas prices," and "Thank you for helping us win in Iran." As some in the audience booed, he accused Vance of protecting pedophiles, a reference to the Trump Administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, and sarcastically thanked President Donald Trump for a $5,000 check, a "dividend" Trump has promised to all American adults if Republicans retain control of Congress.
Shortly after the interruption began, a Lakeland police officer led Braver through an aisle and out of the building. Video shows an officer thrusting his right leg under Braver's and grabbing his left arm to force him to the ground in a paved parking lot, after which two officers handcuffed him. The arresting officer, Macson McGuirk, wrote in his arrest report that at about 1:15 p.m. Braver "was observed yelling as loud as possible, thanking the vice president for the 'gas prices' and filming a grandiose display with a cellphone on a camera gimble." McGuirk wrote that Braver pushed against the escort and planted his foot against the direction he was being moved, and that he then used a "leg sweep" to take Braver to the ground. Braver, reached by phone the next day, said he did not intend to resist and voluntarily walked out of the venue as McGuirk escorted him.
Resuming his speech, Vance described the disruptor as a clown and "a Democrat plant." LPD arrested Braver and charged him with trespassing and resisting arrest without violence, both first-degree misdemeanors. Braver was taken to the Polk County Jail's processing center about 2 p.m., where he suffered "a big gash" on his elbow, was given only a bandage with no bacterial ointment by a nurse, and was placed in what he called a dirty and overcrowded jail cell. He spent 13 hours at the jail before being released about 3 a.m. after paying a $2,000 bond. Braver has no previous arrests and said he did not expect to end up in jail. Before the event, a Ledger staffer saw him confronting Donalds over data centers and energy policy. He is running against incumbent Rep. Karen Gonzalez Pittman, R-Tampa, in the House District 65 race.
Our take
Let’s get this straight: the vice president of the United States, the supposed tough-guy heir to the MAGA throne, had his speech saved by a fucking leg sweep. A 24-year-old kid with a phone on a pole stood up and said some mean, sarcastic shit about gas prices and Iran, and that was enough for JD Vance to need a cop to do his dirty work. What a pathetic, limp-dick performance. The cop, Macson McGuirk, even wrote in his report about the kid’s “grandiose display” with a cellphone on a “camera gimble.” You know what’s truly grandiose, you asshole? Using a martial arts move on a political candidate because your boss can’t handle a heckle about the fucking price of gas.
Vance then got back on stage and called Braver a clown and “a Democrat plant.” Of course he did. That’s the coward’s playbook: when you can’t argue, just label the other guy a fake. This from the party that never shuts its cunt mouth about being strong and standing up to the libs. Their idea of strength is watching a police officer trip a guy in a parking lot for the crime of sarcasm. Real tough guys, huh? They’ll send a kid to jail for 13 hours over a joke, but they can’t actually deliver on the $5,000 check Braver was sarcastically thanking them for. The only dividend they pay out is a night in a dirty cell and a gash on your elbow.
Braver walked out voluntarily with the cop. He didn’t rush the stage. He didn’t throw a punch. He just said the quiet part out loud about pedophile protection and empty promises. For that, he got the full Florida justice experience: a trip to the concrete, handcuffs, a bandage with no ointment for his wound, and a $2,000 bond. He’s running for a state house seat, and his opponent, Karen Gonzalez Pittman, now gets to run against a guy who was literally swept off his feet by the Lakeland PD for insulting the VP. That’s some bullshit political advertising you can’t buy.
The whole fucking scene is a perfect little allegory. The so-called strongmen can’t handle words, so they use the state’s violence instead. Officer McGuirk put more effort into that leg sweep than Vance has ever put into explaining his policy on Iran or actually lowering gas prices. The system works with stunning efficiency to protect the fragile egos of powerful dickheads, while a first-time offender gets the shit kicked out of his night and his bank account. Vance is a fraud, his toughness is a fiction maintained by cops with bad spelling, and this story is the proof, served face-down on the asphalt.
