The facts
Attorneys for Minnesota lawmaker Ilhan Omar have requested the U.S. Department of Justice return property seized from her home during a federal search, asserting the action was "neither justified nor lawful." The Associated Press reported on the lawyers' letter Friday. The federal investigation into Omar was launched weeks before the November 3 midterms, in which Omar is on the ballot. Democrats accused then-President Donald Trump of abusing his power to target a political opponent. Omar's attorneys wrote that there is "no legitimate basis for any suggestion that she has violated any law concerning her citizenship status," according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported on the letter. They stated the investigation "violates Representative Omar’s constitutional rights and threatens the separation of powers." The federal government had issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas and seized Omar's phone as part of the investigation. A Justice Department spokesperson, Emily Covington, told the AP that the letter from Omar's defense team was "riddled with false allegations and inaccuracies." Covington added, "Our attorneys and law enforcement partners complied with all court orders and legal obligations, as they always do." Omar's attorneys also accused the Justice Department of violating its policy to avoid influencing elections and raised concerns about whether investigators followed the magistrate judge's instructions. They demanded the preservation of any audio and video recordings from the search. The investigation reportedly began after years of unsubstantiated rumors promoted by Trump and conservative media figures that Omar's ex-husband was her brother, and that she married him for immigration purposes. Omar has denied this allegation. Fox News reported, citing sources close to the investigation, that the search was related to a criminal fraud investigation concerning Omar's immigration paperwork, which her father completed when she was a child. Omar posted on X, "Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement." Trump denied involvement in the investigation, stating, "I’ve always found her to be totally crooked, personally, but that has nothing to do with me."
Our take
The Department of Justice, a sprawling temple of American jurisprudence, has apparently devolved into a pack of petty, election-season dickheads with subpoenas. According to Ilhan Omar's lawyers, these federal assholes launched an investigation weeks before the midterms, swanned into her home, and seized her phone like they were repossessing a fucking TV from a deadbeat. Their legal justification? Years of bullshit rumors, peddled by Donald Trump and his media sycophants, that Omar married her brother for a green card - a story so fucking stupid it belongs on a bathroom stall, not in a federal warrant.
Omar's attorneys, who are presumably billing by the hour to deal with this clown show, called the raid "neither justified nor lawful." The Justice Department's spokesperson, Emily Covington, fired back that the letter was "riddled with false allegations and inaccuracies," which is bureaucrat-speak for we're pissed we got called out. She then insisted everyone "complied with all court orders and legal obligations, as they always do," a line so generic it could be on a plaque in the lobby of a strip-mall tax firm. Of course they always do, sweetheart. That's why we're having this conversation.
The sheer vanity of this operation is breathtaking. The feds issued more than a dozen grand jury subpoenas and grabbed a congresswoman's phone over immigration paperwork her dad filled out when she was a child. What's next? Seizing AOC's diary to see if she really liked that fucking dress? This is the legal equivalent of sending a SWAT team to collect a library fine. Omar posted on X that this is "an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement," which is the most obvious fucking statement since water is wet.
And then there's Trump, the orange-haired architect of so much of this shit, piping up from the sidelines to say, "I’ve always found her to be totally crooked, personally, but that has nothing to do with me." Right. It has nothing to do with you, you absolute cunt, except for the part where you spent years spewing the exact lies that inspired this fishing expedition. The DOJ now looks like a bunch of Trump's personal goons, using the full might of the federal government to settle a Twitter beef. They're not law enforcement; they're a fucking revenge delivery service with bad suits and subpoena power.
Omar's lawyers are now demanding the preservation of any audio and video from the raid, which is smart, because you know some federal dickhead probably tried to pocket a souvenir coaster. The whole affair is a pathetic, small-dick energy play masquerading as justice. It's the kind of bullshit that makes people hate the government, and for once, they're absolutely right to.
