The facts
BBC Verify identified 254 incidents from 7 Oct 2023 to 19 Aug 2026 in which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it was investigating alleged killings or injuries in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and Israel. At least one person was reported killed in more than 200 of those cases. Using AI tools, BBC Verify screened over 60,000 news reports and manually checked each incident, finding that the IDF had publicly posted outcomes for only 28 of the 300 cases it claimed to be reviewing. The military provided information on just two of the 254 incidents when asked, describing them as “still under review.” The International Committee of the Red Cross says investigations of possible violations of international humanitarian law should be transparent, a standard the IDF has not met for the majority of these cases.
Our take
The IDF’s so‑called investigative fucking process reads like a bureaucratic nightmare designed to hide, not to reveal, the truth. BBC Verify’s deep‑dive uncovered a staggering 254 alleged incidents of lethal force, yet the military has only ever published outcomes for a paltry 28. That means over 225 cases remain shrouded in secrecy, with families left in the dark and no accountability in sight. When pressed, the IDF’s response is the same stale line: investigations are “complex” and take time. Sure, a strike that killed 93 people in a Gaza school in August 2024 is complex, but that’s no excuse for burying the facts under endless “under review” labels. The International Committee of the Red Cross stresses that transparency is a cornerstone of lawful investigations, a principle the IDF has blatantly ignored. Instead of genuine scrutiny, the military appears to be filing these cases away like paperwork in a dusty cabinet, offering nothing more than hollow statements and vague timelines. This pattern erodes any claim the IDF takes civilian harm seriously. It also fuels a dangerous narrative that impunity is the default outcome for alleged war crimes. The world deserves more than a bureaucratic shrug; it deserves concrete answers, accountability, and a clear signal that violations will not be swept under the rug. Until the IDF starts publishing real findings, the promise of investigation remains a cruel joke, and the victims’ families are left to stare at an empty void where justice should be.
