The facts
Hungary's Prime Minister Peter Magyar vowed to dismantle Viktor Orban's corrupt networks. High-profile figures are being arrested, and many Hungarians are pushing for swift accountability, but the rule of law takes time. One of the new Hungarian government's key pledges was to investigate corruption under Viktor Orban, recover embezzled assets, and hold those responsible accountable. Prime Minister Peter Magyar launched "Operation Purgatory" at the end of June 2026. Measured against his fighting talk, little has happened so far, although some government funds flowing to Orban-aligned businessmen have been cut off. Police and prosecutors have summoned a handful of relatively unknown individuals for questioning, and a few people were arrested. The governing majority also established an agency to recover assets, but it is not yet up and running. At the beginning of the week, two prominent lawmakers and former ministers were arrested over corruption allegations. Balazs Hanko, formerly minister for culture and innovation, and Miklos Sesztak, a former development minister, are the subject of corruption investigations. Hanko allegedly unlawfully allocated around 50 million euros from the National Cultural Fund in 2025 and 2026. Sesztak allegedly accepted around €30 million in bribes between 2015 and 2018. Both were taken into pretrial detention.
Our take
Prime Minister Peter Magyar got elected by screaming he’d be a fucking blowtorch to Orban’s corruption. He launched 'Operation Purgatory' like it was D-Day for dickheads. So what’s this heroic purge accomplished? He cut off some money flows to Orban’s pals. Wow. That’s like trying to stop a sewage leak by putting a band-aid on a manhole cover. They summoned a few irrelevant pricks for questioning, which is the legal equivalent of asking a bank robber if he’s sure he wants to proceed. They also established an asset recovery agency that doesn’t fucking work yet. That’s not an operation; it’s a bureaucratic handjob where the only thing getting recovered is Magyar’s own smug sense of accomplishment.
For months, this 'purgatory' was a waiting room where the guilty could check their phones and wonder when the grown-ups would show up. Magyar’s tough talk curdled into the rancid bullshit it always was - a performance for suckers who thought changing the nameplate on the door meant the thieves would stop stealing. Then, in a stunning breakthrough of basic fucking competence, they arrested two people. Balazs Hanko and Miklos Sesztak, former ministers. These aren’t junior varsity embezzlers. Hanko allegedly stole 50 million euros from the National Cultural Fund over two years. That’s not a mistake; that’s a second career. Sesztak allegedly spent three years swallowing 30 million euros in bribes. That’s not a side hustle; that’s a full-time job being a greedy cunt.
So now these two bloated ticks are in pretrial detention. Congratulations, you useless bastards. You managed to do the one thing your entire government was created to do, and it only took you months of fucking around to get to step one. The rule of law takes time, they whine. No shit. It also takes a spine, which Magyar seems to have traded for a thesaurus of empty promises. This isn’t a crackdown; it’s a pathetic, drawn-out apology for one. They promised a bonfire and brought a fucking Zippo with no fluid. What a bunch of cowardly, time-wasting pricks.
