Hungarian Parliament Scrambles to Unfuck Itself

Lawmakers reverse bigoted 'sealed package' law after EU court ruling, with €4.2 billion of frozen cash serving as the world's most expensive 'Oops, our bad' note.

The facts

Hungary's parliament has passed a bill to amend a 2021 law that restricted the "portrayal" or "promotion" of sexual and gender diversity in content accessible to children. The original law, enacted under nationalist ex-leader Viktor Orban, required age-inappropriate materials, including books on LGBTQ+ topics, to be sold in sealed packaging with warnings. Critics argued this law falsely linked homosexuality with child abuse. The European Court of Justice had ruled in April that the statute violated EU treaties. The amendment, passed with 139 votes in favor and 51 against, repeals most of the 2021 law, with the exception of provisions protecting individuals under 18 from sexually explicit or violent material. Orban's successor, Peter Magyar, who is also a conservative, has pledged to dismantle authoritarian structures and corruption from Orban's tenure. The European Union welcomed the vote, unfrozen €4.2 billion ($4.7 billion) in funding to Hungary following the decision.

Our take

Well, well, well. It turns out the entire Hungarian government’s moral crusade against gay books was just a cheap grift held together by the structural integrity of wet Kleenex. The moment the European Court of Justice ruled their 'child protection' law was a crock of shit, the whole facade collapsed faster than a cheap suit in a rainstorm. Turns out Viktor Orban’s deeply held principles were just a performance art piece titled 'How to Be a Gaping Asshole for Fun and Profit,' and the profit part just got vetoed by Brussels holding the purse strings. The parliament, in a stunning display of not wanting to be broke, voted to ditch the law. They’re keeping the bit about protecting kids from actual porn, because even a pack of performative pricks needs *something* to hide behind while they perform their humiliating public U-turn. Let’s be crystal clear: they didn’t have a change of heart. They had a change of bank statement. The €4.2 billion in previously frozen EU funds wasn’t just an incentive; it was a financial enema that finally flushed the legislative turd they’d been polishing for years. Peter Magyar, the new conservative boss, gets to play the reformer while simply doing what the court ordered, which is the political equivalent of taking credit for not shitting your own pants after being told you’ll be fined. The law itself was always a coward’s project - forcing books into sealed packaging like they were radioactive, based on the pathetic, sweaty-palmed fear that a child might learn gay people exist. That’s not protecting kids; that’s admitting your entire worldview is so fragile it can be shattered by a fucking picture book. Good riddance. Now the only thing in sealed packaging should be Orban’s legacy: a vacuum-sealed bag of pure, concentrated bullshit. The EU is right to unfreeze the cash, because watching these clowns desperately pocket the money while pretending they meant to do this all along is the most expensive comedy special ever produced. Next time, just send the invoice directly to the bigots and skip the legislative theater, you absolute cunts. You were never brave, you were just cheap. And now you’re not even that.
