The facts

The Department of Homeland Security has allocated $20 million in taxpayer funds for campaign-style advertisements that praise President Donald Trump. This spending has drawn criticism from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers, who argue it constitutes a misuse of public money and may violate anti-propaganda laws. Senators Patty Murray and Chris Murphy, in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, stated that the funds were intended for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and that using government money for political ads is illegal. They demanded answers within 48 hours regarding the use of these funds and whether additional money would be spent on similar ads. The White House has defended the advertisements as public service announcements, despite their resemblance to campaign materials and airing during popular television programs. Experts suggest the ads differ from typical PSAs as they do not aim to inform the public about specific government programs. Some Republicans, including Senator Thom Tillis, have compared the ads to those used by authoritarian regimes, while Senate Majority Leader John Thune stated they should not be paid for with taxpayer dollars. Data indicates over $2.5 million has been spent on three ads in the past week, with the total commitment from DHS reportedly reaching $20 million. House Democrats claim that Russ Vought, Trump's director of the Office of Management and Budget, redirected funds from Homeland Security to the ad campaign on September 19.

Our take

Here’s a new definition of homeland security: protecting the fragile ego of a president who needs a $20 million taxpayer-funded jerk-off session broadcast into your living room. The Department of Homeland Security, tasked with stopping threats to the nation, has instead decided the gravest danger is Donald Trump not seeing enough commercials where he’s the star. They’ve turned the agency into a fucking vanity press, shoveling public money into ads that look, sound, and smell like campaign spots because the grifter-in-chief can’t bear a single minute not being worshipped on TV. It’s a staggering act of bureaucratic cuntery. Both Republicans and Democrats are calling this illegal propaganda, which is the political equivalent of a shark and a lifeguard agreeing the water is full of shit. Even some GOP senators, like Thom Tillis, compared it to ads run by authoritarian regimes, which is rich coming from a party currently licking the boot of the wannabe autocrat in question. The White House’s defense - calling these ‘public service announcements’ - is such transparent bullshit it’s a wonder it doesn’t stain the Resolute Desk. These ads don’t inform the public about a goddamn thing except Trump’s desperate need for constant validation. Experts note they don’t explain any government programs, because the only program here is the ‘Make Donald Feel Big’ initiative. The cash was allegedly redirected by Trump’s OMB director, Russ Vought, because why have a budget office when you can have a personal slush fund manager? Over $2.5 million has been pissed away on just three ads in a week, with the full $20 million commitment showing this isn’t a mistake - it’s a policy. A policy of treating the Treasury like Trump’s own campaign ATM, with DHS as the fucking card skimmer. Senators demanded answers within 48 hours. Here’s one answer: the homeland isn’t secure, because its protectors are too busy filming infomercials for a conceited prick.
