The facts
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth directed commanders and supervisors across the Department of Defense (DOD) to conduct a one-day voting “stand down” this month so service members and their families get time to register, request ballots and cast their votes. He announced it in a video posted Friday.
“We all agree that voting is important,” Hegseth said. “So, how about we make sure those who serve our country have every single opportunity to vote?”
But the Trump administration and Republican allies have pursued a series of legal and administrative changes that could make it harder for those same military voters and their families to cast ballots, according to Democracy Docket. The administration eliminated a federal email-to-fax service that helped service members return election materials, made last-minute changes to the federal forms they use to register and request ballots, and tried to overhaul mail ballot rules before courts blocked those efforts for the midterms.
Hegseth himself acknowledged voting has been “time consuming and complex” for many service members, blaming “unnecessary, difficult ways of obtaining, completing, and returning absentee ballots while serving far from home.” A week earlier he had urged “warfighters, their spouses, and eligible family members” to go to FVAP.gov, calling the federal postcard application and federal write-in absentee ballot processes “straightforward and protected by law.”
The email-to-fax tool is gone for good. Under the current Trump administration, FVAP quietly discontinued its Department of Defense Fax Service, which had allowed military and overseas voters to email election materials to FVAP and have the agency fax them to local election officials. The service was intended for voters who needed to return materials by fax but did not have access to a fax machine. In California, for example, military and overseas voters may now receive ballots electronically but can no longer return ballots by email.
The registration forms were rewritten too. The Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) now creates a more explicit hierarchy for identification information: voters are first asked for a state driver’s license or ID, then the last four digits of their Social Security number if they do not have a state ID, then alternative identification such as a passport or military ID if they have neither. DOD has said the change is meant to align the form with federal law, but the Democratic National Committee has sued DOD and the Office of Management and Budget over the forms.
On mail voting, a March executive order directed federal action on mail ballots, and USPS later proposed rules tied to that order. A federal court blocked USPS from implementing the restrictions, finding they were likely unconstitutional and likely to disenfranchise voters ahead of the midterms. Military advocates warned the rule threatened military members who rely on mail voting, and National Security Leaders for America, a coalition of former senior military, diplomatic, and national security officials, filed a brief arguing USPS had not shown how it would reliably identify and protect UOCAVA ballots. In Watson v. Republican National Committee, the GOP challenged Mississippi’s law allowing mail ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted if they arrive up to five business days later. The Trump administration supported the RNC’s challenge, and the Supreme Court rejected it in June. A brief filed by Vet Voice Foundation and the Mississippi Alliance for Retired Americans noted that 17 states apply similar post-election receipt rules specifically to military and overseas voters.
Hegseth framed the voting stand-down as a way to ensure service members have time to participate: “Every warrior deserves an opportunity to cast his or her ballot and be confident that it will be counted,” he said.
Our take
This is the most pathetic, transparent, and cowardly piece of political theater imaginable. Pete Hegseth, you self-important fucking clown, you stand in front of a camera and talk about giving 'warfighters' an 'opportunity' while the bureaucratic dickheads you work for have spent the last year systematically dismantling the very pathways that opportunity travels on. You gave them a fucking hall pass to a room where the door is welded shut and the windows are bricked over. What a generous, empty-headed prick.
The sheer, balls-out hypocrisy is breathtaking. In one breath, you admit voting is 'time consuming and complex' with 'unnecessary, difficult ways' for soldiers to get their ballots counted. In the next, you're the same asshole whose administration made it that way. You unplugged the goddamn email-to-fax machine. You know, that little tool for people who don't have a fucking fax machine in their fucking foxhole? Gone. Quietly discontinued. You rewrote the registration forms to create a new 'hierarchy' of ID that's just another bureaucratic tripwire for someone deployed overseas. And then you had the fucking nerve to support lawsuits trying to kill rules that give military ballots a few extra days to arrive - rules that exist precisely because mail to a warzone is slow, you dense motherfucker.
So you film a video. Big fucking deal. You tell them to go to FVAP.gov and call the process 'straightforward.' It's about as straightforward as a minefield you just laid yourself. You're handing out a map with one hand and planting the explosives with the other. 'Every warrior deserves an opportunity... and be confident that it will be counted.' How can they be confident, you useless piece of shit, when your team is in court arguing that ballots arriving a few days late shouldn't count? Confidence doesn't come from a day off, it comes from a system that isn't actively trying to fuck them over.
This isn't leadership. It's performance. It's the political equivalent of setting someone's house on fire, then showing up with a single bucket of water and expecting a fucking medal for community service. You're not solving a problem you identified; you're creating a photo-op to distract from the problem you caused. The troops don't need a 'stand down' from you. They need you and your administration to stop being such malicious, vote-suppressing bastards and actually reconnect the fax line, fix the forms, and get the hell out of the way of their ballots. A day off to navigate the obstacle course you built is an insult. Go fuck yourself.
