The facts
In October 2026, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, 18, of Richfield, Minnesota, was charged with one count of knowingly receiving a firearm and ammunition in order to commit a federal crime of terrorism. Beginning in December 2024, Mohamud exchanged hundreds of messages through multiple social media and messaging applications with a confidential source. Mohamud expressed his desire to travel to Somalia to join a designated foreign terrorist organization and fight on its behalf. Unable to fund his travel due to financial constraints, Mohamud discussed carrying out a mass-casualty event in Minnesota. In July 2026, Mohamud sent messages discussing his intent to carry out a mass-casualty shooting attack at the Mall of America because he claimed it was owned by Jews. He aimed to kill 30 to 60 people so no one would go there. On Oct. 6, 2026, the FBI arrested Mohamud and sold him, through an undercover FBI employee, an AK-47 assault rifle, four 30-round magazines, and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition. The FBI rendered the AK-47 rifle inert prior to the transaction. During the sale, Mohamud reaffirmed his plan to use the firearm and ammunition to shoot people at the Mall of America.
Our take
Hundreds of messages over nearly two years, and his entire terror network turned out to be a confidential source, an undercover FBI employee, and a rifle that did not work. Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud did not build a cell. He built a group chat with the feds, and he was the only one who did not know it. His master plan had one fatal flaw, and it was not the FBI. It was his wallet. He wanted to fly to Somalia to join a terrorist organization and fight on its behalf, but he could not afford the trip, so he downgraded his holy war to the Mall of America. Somewhere a recruiter is quietly taking Minnesota off the brochure. He picked Oct. 24 as his big day because a Hmong Arts Celebration would draw a crowd to the mall. His target selection was basically Eventbrite for murder. And his grand finale, the moment nearly two years of plotting had been building toward, was handing $600 in cash to an undercover FBI employee in a parking lot for an AK-47 that had been rendered inert. He walked away holding the most expensive paperweight in the history of jihad, reaffirmed his plan to shoot people at the mall while holding a gun that could not shoot, and was arrested shortly after. Patel says the FBI has prevented over 1,100 individuals from conducting attacks. This one they stopped with a receipt. There is a version of this story where the guy is a criminal mastermind. This is not that version. This is the version where the caliphate got outbid by a sting operation and the down payment was six hundred bucks. What an absolute fucking idiot. A wannabe jihadi who can't even get his hands on a working firearm. What a total cunt. The FBI just trolled him like a clumsy troll getting baited on Twitter. They sold him a useless gun for six hundred bucks and called it a day. That's some next-level piss-poor planning right there. He's basically a domestic shitshow waiting to happen. An embarrassment to every actual jihadi out there trying to do harm. This fucker couldn't pull off a decent wet dream, let alone a massacre. The FBI caught him with ease because he's a goddamn amateur. An incompetent little prick who thought he could change the world with his stupid fantasies and an inert AK-47. The whole ordeal sounds like something out of a bad parody movie – 'The Caliphate Cliché' or 'Jihad for Dummies.' His legacy? A footnote in FBI's 'Foiled Plots' pamphlet, forever known as 'that kid who bought a worthless gun for $600.'
