The facts
The Guardian reported that on Saturday, a Michigan town‑hall audience member who introduced himself only as “Tommy” asked Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El‑Sayed to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. El‑Sayed replied affirmatively and then turned the question back, asking whether the questioner would disavow attempts to read religious doctrine into U.S. law. Tommy said he would not and left the room. Congressional staff records identified the questioner as Thomas Teepell, who had worked for Republican Senator Josh Hawley, rising from an intern in 2023 to operations director before leaving the office in February 2026. After departing Hawley’s office, Teepell became political director for Philip Sarnecki’s Kansas gubernatorial campaign, which lost the Republican primary on 4 August. The incident echoes a broader pattern of Republican attacks on El‑Sayed’s alleged ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, claims that El‑Sayed and his family have repeatedly denied.
Our take
Here is the entire fucking Republican political strategy in 2026: send a failed, low-level staffer to a public event to ask a single, racist, pre-packaged question, and then run away when you get a taste of your own medicine. Thomas 'Tommy' Teepell, who went from being Josh Hawley's intern to his 'operations director' - a title that probably means he was in charge of ordering the pizza and keeping the printer toner stocked - thought he'd be a big man. He waddled up to the mic, gave his cute little first-name-only alias like a toddler playing spy, and delivered his one line: ask the Muslim candidate to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood. What a brave, original piece of shit. It's the political equivalent of a dog barking the one trick it knows. Abdul El-Sayed, who has spent his entire campaign having to deny this exact bullshit smear, just said 'sure' and then asked the perfect fucking question back: will you disavow trying to force religious doctrine into U.S. law? And this coward, this absolute prick who works for the party of 'religious liberty,' immediately said 'no' and scurried out of the room like a roach when the lights come on. He couldn't even stand there for the conversation he demanded. That's because his entire purpose wasn't to have a debate; it was to plant a seed of bigoted suspicion and then flee before anyone could point out what a pathetic, hackneyed, transparently racist stunt it was. And where is this master strategist now? He's the political director for Philip Sarnecki's Kansas gubernatorial campaign, which just fucking lost its primary. So this dickhead can't even pick a winning horse. He's a professional loser who specializes in cheap, cowardly attacks that blow up in his face. He's the human embodiment of a fart in an elevator - briefly offensive, entirely substance-free, and everyone is just relieved when he leaves. Hawley must be so proud of his protégé. This is the caliber of man they're deploying: a guy whose greatest political achievement is running from a question he asked.
