Thomas Crooks Ordered Gun Parts as ‘Bob Dole,’ Because Apparently the Alias Desk Was Drunk

Federal records reviewed by Fox News reportedly show Thomas Crooks collected gun-part packages under the alias ‘Bob Dole,’ while an unidentified donor later paid for his cremation.

The facts

Fox News Digital reported on September 15 that federal records show Thomas Matthew Crooks used the alias “Bob Dole” while receiving packages containing gun parts before the July 2024 assassination attempt against Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. The report says Crooks, then 20, usually collected packages addressed to that alias before his father returned from working late.

According to Fox, Crooks's father told investigators the alias appeared after the father's checking account had been hacked and hit with fraudulent gambling charges. The records were turned over to the Senate, and Fox said Crooks's motive remains unknown. Crooks was shot and killed after opening fire at the rally, where one bystander was killed and two others were seriously wounded.

Fox also reported that a family attorney told investigators Crooks was cremated shortly after the shooting and that an unidentified donor paid for it. Breaking911 summarized those reported details in the X post assigned to this desk. Neither the post nor the Fox report identifies the donor.

Our take

“Bob Dole” is not an alias. It is what happens when the fake-name department gets drunk, finds an old political name in the filing cabinet, and decides subtlety can go fuck itself.

According to the records Fox reviewed, Crooks was collecting packages containing gun parts under that name before his father got home. The arrangement is sinister enough on its own. Then the chosen disguise walks into frame wearing a giant novelty badge that says HELLO, MY NAME IS A VERY RECOGNIZABLE POLITICIAN. If the goal was to disappear into ordinary mail, this was less cloak-and-dagger and more trench coat covered in flashing Christmas lights.

The explanation reported by Fox makes the whole thing even stranger. Crooks's father said the pseudonym followed a hacked checking account and fraudulent gambling charges. That may describe when the name entered the household story, but it does not explain why “Bob Dole” became the preferred recipient for gun-part packages. It is an answer shaped exactly like another question.

Then comes the anonymous cremation payment. The report says an unidentified donor covered the cost, and that is all the evidence currently supports. It does not prove a conspiracy, a cover-up, or any of the other conclusions social media can manufacture before breakfast. It does, however, add one more unexplained transaction to a case where the motive is still unknown.

That distinction matters. “Unidentified” is not a synonym for “secret mastermind,” just as “Bob Dole” is not proof that a former presidential campaign wandered into the plot. The facts are already weird enough without stapling homemade mythology to them.

What the records leave us with is a grim little stack of unanswered administrative details: gun parts arriving under an absurd alias, a father apparently unaware of what was being collected before he got home, and a cremation bill paid by somebody the report does not name. The responsible response is to demand the documents and trace the money. The irresponsible response is to invent twelve accomplices and a mole inside the post office.

For once, reality has supplied the ridiculous name tag. Nobody needs to forge extra bullshit underneath it.
