The facts
Governor Gavin Newsom signed 11 workplace bills in the last few days, most of which take effect on Jan. 1, 2027. SB 947, dubbed the “No Robo‑Bosses Act,” makes California the first state to require a person to independently confirm any AI‑driven discipline or termination of a current employee; violations carry a $500 penalty and the law becomes effective July 1, 2027. SB 951 adds four new disclosures to WARN notices when a mass layoff is caused “in whole or in substantial part” by AI or automation, starting Jan. 1, 2027. AB 1883 bars employers from using AI‑powered tools to read or predict an employee’s emotional state or to collect “neural data” from the nervous system, with penalties up to $500 per violation. AB 1331 prohibits the use of any surveillance tool to monitor employees in a bathroom unless a court order is obtained, also effective Jan. 1, 2027, and carries the same $500 per‑violation penalty. Additionally, SB 1237 raises repeat‑failure pay‑data‑reporting penalties to $1,000 per employee, and AB 2646 sets a new agricultural minimum wage of $19.75 per hour for H‑2A workers. Newsom vetoed AB 1940, which would have added menopause‑related conditions to the state’s anti‑discrimination law, citing concerns that existing law already covers those conditions.
Our take
What a sad, pathetic fucking state of affairs. Gavin Newsom just signed a stack of laws that read like the terms of service for a cyber‑punk prison. The fact that we need a goddamn ‘No Robo‑Bosses Act’ in the first place is a testament to the absolute cunts running corporate America who thought, You know what would make firing more efficient? Removing the last shred of human decency. Now, thanks to Newsom’s signature, an algorithm can’t just shit‑can you; some poor fucker in HR has to look at the robot’s output, give it a thumbs‑up, and sign their name. That’s progress, apparently. A $500 fine for violating it is a joke – that’s less than the cost of the EEG headband they were using to monitor your ‘focus.’ The surveillance bans are the most revealing. AB 1883 forces bosses to stop buying software that scans your brainwaves to see if you’re sad about your shitty job. AB 1331 makes it illegal to track you in the bathroom – not just cameras, but access badges, wearables, geolocation on company phones, and time‑tracking software. They had to make it illegal for a manager to data‑mine how long you spend taking a piss. The dystopia isn’t coming; it’s already here, run by micromanaging bastards who think your colon is a key performance indicator. And then there’s the menopause veto. Newsom says protecting women from discrimination for a universal biological process might cause an ‘explosion of litigation.’ So he frees your piss from corporate surveillance but tells menopausal women to go fuck themselves because the courts might get busy. That’s pure, unadulterated cowardice. The package is a monument to how low the bar has fallen. It’s not visionary; it’s cleaning up the vile, invasive shit bosses were already doing because they have no fucking shame. Newsom gets to look like a forward‑thinking regulator while using the same pen to tell half the workforce their medical realities are too legally risky to protect. The robot needs a permission slip to fire you, but the governor needs no permission at all to be a calculating, politically‑cover‑your‑ass bastard.
