The facts
Gabon has lifted an eight-month ban on social media, the High Communication Authority (HAC) announced on Saturday. The ban, implemented on February 17, was justified by the HAC as a measure to prevent the spread of content fueling conflict and deepening divisions. The decision had drawn criticism, with the opposition labeling it an abuse of power. Social media platforms like Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram are popular in the central African nation of approximately 2.5 million people, particularly among younger demographics who utilize them for both personal and professional purposes. Many Gabonese resorted to using VPNs to circumvent the restrictions. The ban coincided with a period of social unrest following President Brice Oligui Nguema's election, amidst strikes by teachers and civil servants over pay and working conditions. Nguema, who came to power via a coup two years prior, pledged reforms for Gabon, a country historically subject to digital blackouts by previous administrations to control information.
Our take
Let's get this straight: the High Communication Authority of Gabon, a panel of presumably grown adults, just spent eight whole months playing the world's most pathetic game of digital hide-and-seek with its own citizens. They threw a nationwide sulk, flipped the 'off' switch on Facebook and TikTok because people were posting mean things, and now they want a fucking parade for switching it back on. What a pack of sensitive, bureaucratic bastards.
Their official excuse is a masterpiece of cowardly bullshit. They banned social media to prevent the spread of content 'fueling conflict and deepening divisions'. You know what fuels conflict, you absolute dickheads? A president who seized power in a coup, ruling over a country where teachers and civil servants are striking because they can't get paid. The 'content' was just a mirror, and these fragile pricks decided to ban the mirror instead of cleaning up the ugly shit reflected in it. They didn't prevent conflict; they just proved they're terrified of it.
So for 240 days, they forced an entire nation, especially the young people who use these platforms to fucking work and live, to download VPNs. Think about the sheer, petty vanity of that. A government body's primary achievement for nearly a year was being a speed bump for teenagers trying to watch TikTok tutorials. They turned the state into a whiny hall monitor confiscating phones because someone passed a note saying the principal's hair looks stupid.
This is the 'reform' promised by President Brice Oligui Nguema? A digital blackout identical to the ones run by the old regimes he supposedly replaced? It's not reform, it's a fucking rerun. It's the same old playbook of insecure cunts who believe sovereignty means having the world's most fragile ego. The ban was a neon sign blinking 'WE ARE SCARED OF YOU' over every internet cafe in Gabon.
And the best part? It didn't even work. People used VPNs. The 'divisions' kept right on dividing because they're based on real grievances about pay and power, not fucking Instagram stories. All the HAC managed was to embarrass itself, inconvenience millions, and announce to the planet that Gabon's leadership are the kind of thin-skinned assholes who solve problems by holding their breath until the internet goes away. Now they've 'lifted' the ban. Big fucking whoop. You don't get a medal for stopping a crime you were committing, you pricks. You just look slightly less like a totalitarian toddler for a single afternoon. The connection is back, but the government remains a joke. At least now the citizens can buffer the punchline in high definition.
