The facts
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis withdrew the death warrant for William Lee Thompson on Thursday, halting a planned execution scheduled for the following Tuesday. Thompson, 74, was sentenced to death for the 1976 murder and kidnapping of Sally Ivester. His lawyers stated he is suffering from dementia and is incompetent for execution. Grace Hanna, executive director of Floridians for alternatives to the death penalty, said Thompson's attorneys informed DeSantis that his client was unaware of his death sentence and did not know where he was. Thompson's attorney, Bri Lacy, expressed relief, stating that Thompson's failing health and dementia were grave concerns. The withdrawal comes just over a week after the botched execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee, who survived two lethal injections on September 30. Pike was declared brain dead but later regained consciousness. DeSantis did not provide a reason for withdrawing Thompson's warrant, though he had previously stayed the execution pending a psychiatric evaluation. Thompson will remain on death row, and a new warrant could be issued in the future. Another Florida execution, that of James Robertson, is still scheduled to proceed.
Our take
Well, well, well. It turns out Ron DeSantis, the tough-guy governor who’s spent years licking the boot of the death penalty industrial complex, finally found a spine. Or maybe he just found a mirror and realized how monstrous he’d look executing a 74-year-old man who, according to his own lawyers, is so lost to dementia he doesn’t know he’s on death row or why. What a fucking hero. He withdrew the warrant, not out of mercy, but because the sheer, embarrassing incompetence of killing a brain-fogged old man became a public relations shitstorm even his sociopathic ambitions couldn’t ignore.
This clown had to be told, explicitly, that William Lee Thompson was unaware of his own death sentence. Let that sink in. The state’s grand plan for justice involved strapping down a confused senior citizen and pumping him full of poison while he probably wondered where the fuck his pudding was. That’s not capital punishment; it’s a state-sanctioned snuff film starring a man who can’t remember his lines. DeSantis’s previous ‘stay’ for a psych eval was pure bullshit theater, a coward’s delay hoping the problem would die of natural causes and save him the paperwork. It didn’t, so he had to pull the plug himself, looking like the absolute cunt he is for ever signing the warrant in the first place.
And let’s not forget the timing, you prick. This retreat comes just over a week after Tennessee botched an execution so badly the inmate survived two lethal injections and woke up from being brain dead. The whole country is watching the machinery of death sputter, choke, and piss itself, and even DeSantis could see that following up a zombie execution with murdering a dementia patient would make him look like the villain in a particularly shitty dystopian novel. So he blinked. He showed his whole ass: a weak, vain little man who only cares about cruelty when it polls well.
Of course, Thompson stays on death row, because DeSantis isn’t actually abandoning his bloodlust, just waiting for a more politically palatable victim. Another execution is still scheduled, because the show must go on. This was never about justice or competence; it was about a governor realizing that even his base might gag at killing someone who’s essentially already gone. He’s not a principled leader; he’s a fucking opportunist who got caught with his pants down, holding a syringe pointed at a ghost. The only thing more pathetic than the prisoner’s condition is the governor’s moral cowardice.
