First Amendment 'Challenge' Gets Top Free Speech Prize

Harper's Magazine to present award for championing free speech to a woman who publicly whined it's a pain in the ass for her content-moderation schemes.

The facts

NPR CEO Katherine Maher is set to receive Harper's Magazine's "First Amendment Award" on October 26. The magazine cited Maher's leadership at NPR through "extraordinary political, legal, and financial scrutiny" and her role in "successfully battling" efforts to defund the organization. However, Maher's past statements have drawn scrutiny. In 2021, while CEO of Wikimedia, Maher described the First Amendment as a "challenge" in moderating content and combating disinformation, noting its robust protections for platforms. She stated, "it is a little bit tricky to really address some of the real challenges of where does bad information come from." This comes as NPR itself faced criticism for not covering the Hunter Biden laptop story in 2020, a decision Maher later acknowledged as a mistake. Critics, like Tim Graham of NewsBusters, question the award, suggesting Harper's Magazine's focus on the First Amendment is selective and that Maher's past remarks on censorship contradict the spirit of the award.

Our take

Well, isn't this just the most perfect, steaming pile of media bullshit to ever grace a silver platter. Harper's Magazine, in a move that redefines 'chutzpah', is handing their sacred First Amendment Award to NPR CEO Katherine Maher - a woman who has literally gone on record bitching about how the First Amendment is 'a little bit tricky' when you're trying to police what people say. It's like giving a fire safety award to a pyromaniac who complains that building codes make it hard to store his gasoline collection. What a fucking joke. Maher gets the nod for 'battling' political scrutiny, which in plain English means she's good at begging Congress not to cut off the taxpayer spigot that funds her woke little newsroom. Meanwhile, her past self is on tape moaning that America's foundational free speech protections are a 'challenge' to fighting 'bad information' - the preferred euphemism of every censorious prick who thinks they know what's best for you to hear. This is the same NPR, under her leadership culture, that famously decided the Hunter Biden laptop story wasn't fit for your peasant ears, a decision even she had to later mumble was a 'mistake'. So let's get this straight: the award for defending the principle that lets you call bullshit on power... goes to a powerful media executive who views that principle as a bureaucratic obstacle. Harper's isn't celebrating the First Amendment; they're celebrating a manager who navigates its 'challenges'. They're giving a trophy to the very mindset that sees free speech as a problem to be managed, not a right to be cherished. What a pair of clowns. She's a fucking hypocrite, they're enabling grifters, and the whole ceremony will be a circle-jerk of self-congratulation for people who think the Bill of Rights is a user agreement they can update with new terms of service. Eat shit, all of you. The only thing being awarded here is the gold medal in institutional dickheadedness. Fuck right off with this nonsense. It’s enough to make you puke. And they wonder why nobody trusts the media anymore. Absolute cunts, the lot of them. They can take their award and shove it up their collective ass, sideways. End of story. No, really - go fuck yourselves.
