Ethiopia's Latest Government‑in‑a‑Box Is a Fucking Joke

Abiy Ahmed shits out another 'interim administration' for Tigray, promising stability in six months while the region teeters on the brink.

The facts

Ethiopia’s prime minister Abiy Ahmed announced on Friday an interim administration for the northern Tigray region, giving it six months to prepare for regional elections and restore stability. The new mayor of Mekelle, Shishay Amare, said the administration will focus on peace, returning displaced residents, reopening markets and delivering humanitarian aid. The move follows a September offensive by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and six allied groups, which were forced to retreat and lost control of the region. The African Union estimates the 2020‑2022 Tigray war caused about 600,000 deaths and left roughly one million people displaced. Unresolved disputes remain over western Tigray, claimed by both Tigray and the neighboring Amhara state. Ethiopia and Eritrea, once bitter enemies, signed a peace deal in 2018 but relations have soured; Addis Ababa accuses Asmara of supporting Tigrayan forces, a claim Eritrea denies. Reports of Eritrean troop movements near the border have heightened concerns, though the extent of any deployment is disputed. Journalist Tsedale Lemma told DW the international community is underestimating the threat, citing failures to monitor the November 2022 Pretoria Agreement. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that a military buildup on the Ethiopia‑Eritrea border could spark a wider conflict, while a UK government spokesperson called for de‑escalation and dialogue.

Our take

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, that self‑styled saviour of Ethiopia, has rolled out yet another puppet‑fucking government‑in‑a‑box for Tigray, promising to “restore stability” in six months – the same amount of time it takes him to launch a fresh offensive and then scramble for a new excuse. The joke? The new mayor of Mekelle, Shishay Amare, is tasked with reopening markets and getting displaced people home while the very troops that should be securing the region are allegedly skulking just across the border, and even the Amhara state is already staking a claim on western Tigray. It’s like handing a toddler a hammer and telling him to fix the roof while the house is on fire. The whole thing reeks of a bureaucratic circus: a freshly‑minted administration with zero control over half its claimed territory, a peace agreement from 2018 that now feels about as useful as a screen door on a submarine, and accusations flying back and forth between Addis Ababa and Asmara like a bad sitcom. Meanwhile, the international community, as Tsedale Lemma bluntly put it, is “underestimating the threat,” which in diplomatic speak means we’ll all watch the drama unfold from a safe distance, then issue a polite statement after the next casualty. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s warning about a border buildup and the UK’s call for dialogue are the same old lullabies we’ve heard since the conflict began. In short, Abiy’s grand plan is a vanity project wrapped in a veneer of “interim administration,” but the reality on the ground is a ticking time‑bomb of ethnic tension, displaced civilians and a looming threat of wider war. The only thing being installed here is another layer of bureaucratic farce, and the only election being prepared is for who gets to dig the next mass grave.
