The facts
Reports indicate that Ethiopian government forces have advanced against a northern rebel group in the Tigray region. The Ethiopian government stated it had recaptured Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, which had been seized by rebel groups the previous week. Several news agencies cited anonymous government sources confirming federal forces' control of the airport. The AFP news agency, citing a humanitarian source, reported that rebel groups were withdrawing from Mekelle as Ethiopian forces advanced. Neither side has officially confirmed control of Mekelle, with communication blackouts and restricted media access complicating reporting. The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which recently aligned with other armed opposition groups, had seized the airport on September 23 and launched attacks in neighboring Afar and Amhara regions. TPLF leader Debretsion Gebremichael had vowed to continue guerrilla attacks. The TPLF seeks to overthrow Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government. The renewed conflict has heightened regional tensions, with concerns about a wider spillover in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia has previously accused neighboring Eritrea of supporting Tigray rebels, a claim denied by Eritrea. Ethiopia and Eritrea recently cut diplomatic ties. The African Union has expressed concern and called for restraint.
Our take
Well, fuck me, the TPLF’s little airport holiday is over. Just over a week after these rebel clowns swanned into Alula Aba Nega Airport like they owned the duty-free shop, the Ethiopian government has apparently booted them back out. So much for their grand ‘control of the skies’ strategy - turns out their master plan was to hold the baggage claim for seven days and then fuck off when the real army showed up. What a bunch of tactical geniuses. Leader Debretsion Gebremichael is now vowing ‘guerrilla attacks,’ which is rebel-speak for ‘we got our asses handed to us in a stand-up fight so now we’ll just be annoying pricks in the bushes.’ Stellar pivot, you absolute cunts. Meanwhile, the whole government is operating with the transparency of a brick shithouse, issuing statements through anonymous sources while enforcing a communications blackout so thick you couldn’t beam a signal out with a fucking satellite dish. Nobody will officially confirm who controls the capital, because admitting the truth might hurt someone’s feelings - probably the same vanity that started this bullshit war to begin with. And let’s not forget the regional diplomatic circus. Ethiopia’s out here pointing fingers at Eritrea like a kid blaming his brother for the broken vase, while both countries have cut ties in a fit of geopolitical pettiness that would make middle-schoolers blush. The African Union is ‘concerned,’ which is the diplomatic equivalent of sending a ‘thoughts and prayers’ text. A whole region teetering on the brink because a bunch of dickheads can’t decide who gets to be in charge of a fucking airport. What a shitshow. It’s a race to the bottom, and everyone’s winning. Pathetic. End of. Fuck off, you’re boring me now. Pricks.
