'Not a Disaster': Guardian Pees Its Pants Over England's 7-0 Slaughter of Croatia

The Guardian's soft-balled 'not a disaster' review of a 7-0 win is the journalistic equivalent of a participation trophy.

The facts

The Guardian US Sport article observes that England finished third at the 2026 World Cup, a result the outlet describes as “not a disaster.” It highlights a 7‑0 Nations League victory over Croatia in Rijeka, noting the match felt like a youth‑club sports day with a relaxed atmosphere. The piece points to Thomas Tuchel’s ongoing work to shape a cohesive side, emphasizing the central role of Jude Bellingham and the emergence of players such as Lewis Hall, Jarell Quansah and Alex Scott. The article identifies Euro 2028 as the next major target for England, but frames it as a goal rather than a certainty, stressing that progress must continue over the coming months.

Our take

Alright, you absolute fucking melts. The Guardian has surveyed the smoldering, 7-0 crater that was Croatia and delivered its groundbreaking scientific analysis: this result for England was 'not a disaster.' No shit, you timid cunts. Slapping seven unanswered goals past a former World Cup finalist on their own patch is a bit more than 'not a disaster,' it's a comprehensive pantsing. Calling it that is like surveying the aftermath of a volcanic eruption and calling it 'a bit warm.' It's the kind of cowardly, hedge-your-bets bullshit that makes you wonder if the writer gets a bonus for avoiding any adjective stronger than 'pleasant.'

And the atmosphere was like a youth-club sports day? Fuck off. That's not analysis, that's a confession you've never felt the electric dick-prickle of real sporting hatred. They're trying to frame a historic away demolition as a chill community picnic where everyone gets a juice box. Maybe the vibe was 'relaxed' because Croatia had their souls vacuumed out through their boots by halftime and were just waiting for the final whistle so they could go home and rethink their entire fucking lives.

The article then does the classic wanker's pivot: here's Jude Bellingham, our magnificent cornerstone, and look at these shiny new lads Hall, Quansah, and Scott! Progress! Now please ignore that our next major target, Euro 2028, is still four years away and we're already patting ourselves on the back for a Nations League group game in fucking October. Tuchel is 'shaping a cohesive side'? He just orchestrated a war crime in Rijeka. The only thing being 'shaped' right now is Croatia's national trauma.

This is the problem with English football wankery: they can't just enjoy a savage, brutal win. They have to immediately neuter it with 'measured' bollocks, point to a distant horizon, and talk about 'ongoing work.' They finished third at the last World Cup, which was 'not a disaster.' They just won 7-0, which is 'a positive sign.' What the fuck does this team have to do to earn a 'holy shit, that was monstrous'? Win 12-0 while simultaneously solving climate change? Fuck your progress. Call it what it is: a massacre. Own it, you pricks.
