The facts
The FDA issued warning letter MARCS-CMS 727644 on September 29, 2026, to Ms. Kim Peddle Rguem, CEO of Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, Inc., over its manufacturing facility at 7301 District Blvd in Bakersfield, California.
FDA investigators inspected the plant between January 27 and February 20, 2026, and determined that Dreyer’s frozen, ready-to-eat ice cream cone products were “prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have become contaminated with filth, or whereby they may have been rendered injurious to health.”
The letter’s centerpiece is Listeria. The plant’s own environmental monitoring kept finding Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria spp. at sites throughout the production and auxiliary areas, and as of February 5, 2026, the facility still had 19 positives. The FDA writes that the reoccurring presence of the pathogen in the facility shows the company’s sanitation efforts have not controlled it, and that its hazard analysis never even identified the contamination as a hazard requiring a preventive control.
Then the gloves. On January 28, 2026, an employee making chocolate chip vanilla sandwiches wore heavy duty reusable gloves while repeatedly alternating between touching non-food-contact surfaces and ready-to-eat food, including the cookies used in the sandwiches, without changing them. On February 13, workers handling chopped peanuts repeatedly alternated between touching non-food-contact surfaces, including bins “covered in brown residues”, and the peanuts themselves, without changing gloves. On February 11, employees used bare hands on non-food-contact surfaces during film roll changes for fruit pops without washing.
Dreyer’s sent the FDA emails on March 13 and April 13, 2026, outlining corrective actions taken in response to the Form FDA 483 issued at the inspection’s conclusion. The company has 15 working days to respond to the letter in writing.
Our take
What the fuck is happening at Dreyer's Bakersfield plant? This isn't a factory, it's a fucking bacterial frat house where Listeria monocytogenes is the permanent president. The FDA found nineteen environmental positives in February alone, meaning the pathogen wasn't just visiting - it had fucking moved in, redecorated, and was charging rent. And the company's official hazard analysis, that masterpiece of corporate bullshit, somehow never identified this ongoing microbial rave as a 'hazard requiring a preventive control.' No shit, Sherlock. It's not a 'hazard,' it's a fucking tenant. Their sanitation program is so useless it might as well be leaving out little welcome mats and complimentary mints for the germs. Absolute fucking clown show of an operation. Then there's the gloves, or should we say, the single, crusty, universal hand-sheath. The FDA watched an employee making chocolate chip vanilla sandwiches use the same heavy-duty reusable gloves to touch god-knows-what surface and then handle the cookies that go into your fucking dessert. They weren't changing gloves; they were treating them as a biological extension of their own filthy hands. Another worker did the same shit with chopped peanuts, fondling bins 'covered in brown residues' before going back to the food. What are these 'brown residues'? We don't know, and neither does Dreyer's, because they clearly gave up on basic cleanliness around the same time they decided hazard analysis was an optional creative writing exercise. The bare hands on film rolls for fruit pops just adds a layer of primal, unvarnished grime to the whole shit-salad. Dreyer's sent some 'corrective action' emails months ago, and the FDA's response was to drop this warning letter like a bucket of cold piss on their heads six months later. The company now has fifteen working days to write back and explain how they plan to stop turning America's childhood treat into a Petri dish on a stick. Every second they spend drafting that pathetic reply, another truckload of potentially contaminated cones is rolling out to a store near you. Enjoy your fucking dessert, cunts. It's been lovingly handled.
