The facts
Senate Democrats on Wednesday blocked legislation intended to offset the impact of datacenters on consumer electricity bills, calling it a “toothless” attempt to address a top voter concern ahead of November’s midterm elections. The Ratepayer Protection Act failed by a 57-to-43 vote, falling short of the 60 votes necessary to advance. Four Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the measure. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer stated that Republicans’ datacenter bill “completely misses the mark” and that relying on self-regulation is how the current situation arose. Earlier in September, the House of Representatives had approved the bill by an almost unanimous vote. The bipartisan legislation would have required electric utilities to consider new standards so that datacenters pay for necessary upgrades to transmission, generation, and distribution, costs that can otherwise be transferred to households and businesses. The bill was proposed ahead of the November midterm elections, as Democrats campaign on lowering the cost of living. Its sponsor in the House was Representative Gabe Evans, and Ohio Republican Senator Jon Husted championed the bill in the Senate. Husted argued that big tech should pay its own way and not pass costs onto local communities. Despite the bill's bipartisan support, Democratic leaders opposed it, stating it would be ineffective at addressing datacenter electricity consumption.
Our take
Well, shit. In a move that redefines political cynicism, Senate Democrats have just told every American struggling with their power bill to go suck a high-voltage dick. They blocked the Ratepayer Protection Act, a bill that even their own House colleagues passed almost unanimously, because it was supposedly "toothless." Let's get this straight: their masterstroke was to kill the only tool on the table for making Google and Amazon pay for their own fucking infrastructure, then proudly hold up their empty hands and say, See? No teeth! It's like a dentist refusing a filling because the cavity isn't gold-plated, then sending you the bill for the root canal you'll need next year. What a pack of gutless, posturing assholes.
The sheer, galaxy-brained hypocrisy is fucking breathtaking. These pricks are campaigning across the country right now on a platform of lowering the cost of living. They're out there shaking hands and making promises while, back in Washington, they just voted to let trillion-dollar tech companies keep using your grandma's electricity bill as a corporate subsidy. Ohio Senator Jon Husted's bill had one simple, bastard idea: the entity that needs a whole new power plant to run its AI porn generators should probably pay for that power plant. But Chuck Schumer and his caucus of cowards decided that principle was a bridge too far. Instead, they'd rather have constituents believe they're fighting for them while actively ensuring the fucking fight never starts. It's the political equivalent of a bodyguard who stops a bullet... by shooting the guy who was coming to help you.
Schumer's stated reason is a self-own so profound it should be studied. He said the bill "completely misses the mark" and that relying on self-regulation is how the current situation arose. No shit, Sherlock. So your brilliant fucking solution to the problem of no regulation is to block the regulation? That's not missing the mark; that's throwing the whole fucking bow in the toilet and claiming victory because you didn't get any arrows wet. You had a bill that at least pointed in the right direction - a direction the public and a bipartisan majority fucking wanted - and you smothered it in its crib because it wasn't perfect. You offered nothing but your own useless criticism as an alternative. That's not leadership; that's the behavior of a petulant cunt who'd rather see the whole project fail than share credit for a partial win.
The timing is the rancid, steaming cherry on this sundae of bullshit. They did this right before the midterms, proving their campaign promises are worth less than the hot air used to utter them. They think you're a dumb bastard who won't connect the dots between their stump-speech lies and their Senate-floor actions. They are grifters, pure and simple, protecting their donor class in Silicon Valley while pretending to give a single fuck about the kitchen-table bills of working people. They had a chance to do something concrete and popular. They chose, instead, to be useless, arrogant pricks. Fuck every last one of them.
