The facts
Brendan Nugent, 43, appeared at Wangaratta magistrates court on charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury and intentionally causing serious injury, after allegedly driving a Toyota LandCruiser into independent MP Helen Haines. Haines remains in critical but stable condition. Nugent did not request bail and will remain in custody until a committal mention on February 4. Magistrate Allison Vaughan noted Nugent had mental health and neurological concerns and requested a mental health professional see him. AFP commissioner Krissy Barrett stated there was no specific intelligence indicating a threat to MP Haines. Barrett and Victoria police chief commissioner Mike Bush commented on a growing volume of online abuse, threatening rhetoric, and intimidation directed at MPs, with Barrett noting concerns about lone actors motivated by personal grievance, mental health, and ideological concerns. Victoria police will create a centralized process to monitor threats against MPs.
Our take
So some absolute prick named Brendan Nugent allegedly decided Helen Haines looked better as a hood ornament, and now the top cops are on the news crying about the ‘febrile environment’ like they’re sommeliers describing a nice fucking merlot. It’s not ‘febrile,’ you useless dickheads, it’s a country where psychos think running down a federal MP is a valid form of feedback. The only thing more pathetic than the act is the response: a symphony of bureaucratic hand-wringing about ‘online rhetoric’ while the victim fights for her life in hospital. Bravo. Commissioner Krissy Barrett was quick to clarify there was ‘no specific intelligence’ about a threat to Haines. No shit, Sherlock. The intelligence failure was parked in the driver’s seat of a Toyota, you clown. Meanwhile, the magistrate is already arranging mental health consults for the alleged attempted murderer, because nothing says ‘justice’ like treating a political hit-and-run as a therapeutic opportunity. Victoria Police’s big solution? A ‘centralized process to monitor threats.’ Fantastic. More paperwork. That’ll really stop the next bastard with a grievance and a heavy foot. Maybe instead of monitoring tweets, they could monitor the clear fucking path from a deranged citizen’s brain to an MP’s spine. The whole performance is a masterclass in cowardice: blame the ‘climate,’ blame the ‘rhetoric,’ blame the ‘online abuse’ - anything but the violent cunt in custody and the system that treats political violence as a complex sociological puzzle instead of what it is: a dickhead with a car. Helen Haines is critical, and the authorities are worried about their fucking feelings. Disgraceful. Eat shit, all of you. Next week’s alleged attacker is already warming up his keyboard - and probably his ignition - while these pricks draft another press release. Useless bastards. The only thing getting centralized is the pile of bullshit they’re selling the public. Fuck off and do your jobs. End of story. End of take. End of my patience with this circus of cunts.
