Cleveland Chose Its Best Chance to Score. Jacksonville Let It Happen With 1:52 Left.

Todd Monken said Deshaun Watson gave the Browns their best chance to move the ball. The Jaguars led 34-3 before allowing Cleveland's lone touchdown during garbage collection.

The facts

Cleveland Browns coach Todd Monken named Deshaun Watson the team's Week 1 starting quarterback over Shedeur Sanders after reviewing the offseason, training camp, preseason games and a joint practice. Monken said Watson gave Cleveland its best chance to move the ball and score points, adding that the choice was not intended to be a week-to-week decision.

Watson had completed 16 of 27 preseason passes for 162 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. He had also been booed during Cleveland's 31-7 preseason loss to Buffalo, then apologized after calling the reaction personal and disrespectful.

Jacksonville beat Cleveland 34-10 in the regular-season opener. The Jaguars scored on their first four possessions, led 24-0 at halftime and removed quarterback Trevor Lawrence with a 34-3 lead and 8 minutes, 12 seconds remaining.

Watson finished 16 of 22 for 205 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His 46-yard touchdown pass to Denzel Boston cut the score to 34-10 with 1 minute, 52 seconds left. Jacksonville had intercepted Watson on Cleveland's opening drive and recorded five sacks.

Our take

Todd Monken studied the whole body of work and selected Cleveland's best chance to score points. Jacksonville then spent three quarters presenting the peer-reviewed rebuttal.

The Browns opened with an interception, went to halftime down 24-0 and watched Trevor Lawrence leave early because the game had reached the NFL's mercy-rule equivalent: the winning quarterback no longer needed to be exposed to whatever Cleveland was doing.

Watson's final line looks respectable if you place a tasteful curtain over the clock. The touchdown arrived with 1:52 remaining and the Browns trailing by 31. That is not an offensive breakthrough. It is the Jaguars leaving a porch light on while taking out the trash.

Cleveland's decision was supposedly built from an offseason of evidence. The preseason evidence included zero Watson touchdown passes, one interception and a home crowd booing loudly enough to become part of the news cycle. The organization fed all of that into its football computer and received the familiar result: fuck it, do the expensive thing again.

This is bigger than one quarterback stat line. Jacksonville scored on its first four possessions. Cleveland's defense allowed Lawrence to throw four touchdowns. The Browns managed 14 first downs and surrendered five sacks. It was a coordinated organizational faceplant, the sort where every department reaches the bottom at roughly the same time and still schedules separate meetings to discuss gravity.

Monken also said the decision was not week to week. Admirable commitment. Nothing calms a fan base after a 34-10 loss like learning the emergency exit has been converted into a decorative mural.

Cleveland did eventually prove Watson could move the ball and score. It just waited until Jacksonville had removed Lawrence, emptied the competitive meaning out of the game and started mentally boarding the team bus.
