Chiefs Gave Kenneth Walker the Ball. Denver Gave Him 28 Fucking Missed Tackles.

Kansas City's new running back outgained the entire Broncos offense while Denver's supposedly elite defense practiced aggressive non-contact.

The facts

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Denver Broncos 31-10 on Monday night. In his Chiefs debut, Kenneth Walker III ran for a career-high 173 yards and finished with 191 scrimmage yards, two touchdowns and a 60-yard scoring run. Walker gained more total yardage by himself than Denver's entire offense, which finished with 176.

Denver missed 28 tackles and surrendered 247 yards after those misses, the most by an NFL defense in a game since at least 2018, according to Next Gen Stats. Walker personally forced 14 missed tackles.

Patrick Mahomes also returned nine months after tearing his ACL and LCL. He completed 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while adding a 15-yard rushing touchdown.

The win ended Kansas City's six-game overall losing streak and its three-game skid against Denver.

Our take

Twenty-eight missed tackles is not a bad night. It is a team-wide agreement to respect Kenneth Walker's personal space.

Denver arrived with a defense that had finished third in points allowed for two consecutive seasons. There was preseason talk about chasing sack records. Then Walker took his first four handoffs and the Broncos began tackling like every Chiefs player had recently tested positive for wet paint.

Walker forced 14 misses himself. The remaining 14 were apparently Denver maintaining statistical symmetry while its dignity rolled unattended into the parking lot.

The funniest number is 191. That was Walker's scrimmage-yard total. Denver's entire offense managed 176. One running back produced more yardage than every Broncos quarterback, runner and receiver combined. Kansas City could have sent the offense home early and handed Walker a fucking map.

Denver cornerback Riley Moss said tackling "sounds easy, and it is easy," but the Broncos still needed 28 practical demonstrations. This is like watching someone fall down an escalator and explaining afterward that stairs are usually straightforward.

Bo Nix said the Broncos did not provide a good representation of themselves. Unfortunately, the scoreboard accepts live submissions. Denver's official Week 1 representation is now a collection of orange jerseys reaching toward Kenneth Walker approximately half a second after he left.

Mahomes returned from major knee surgery and somehow became the supporting act. He did not need vintage magic. Walker spent the night dragging Denver's allegedly elite defense behind him like a toilet-paper streamer stuck to his shoe.

Kansas City needed a new running game. Denver generously supplied the open field, missed tackles and complimentary escort service.
