CEC 18-5 Vote Shits on AG Evidence Report While Court Chair Watches

Israel's Central Elections Committee bans Ra'am, Joint List and two candidates despite Attorney General finding insufficient evidence for the parties, then hands the obvious reversal to the Supreme Court whose representative chaired the meeting.

The facts

Israel's Central Elections Committee (CEC) has voted to ban Arab parties, including Ra'am (The United Arab List) and The Joint List, from running in the upcoming election scheduled for October 27. This decision, reportedly made by an 18-5 vote, has been criticized as "another nail in the coffin of democracy." The CEC also banned two individual candidates from The Joint List: Sami Abu Shehadeh, chairman of Balad, and Ofer Cassif, a Jewish lawmaker for Hadash. Supporters of the ban cite a Knesset law that prohibits candidates who deny Israel's existence as a Jewish and democratic state, incite racism, or support armed struggle against Israel. Petitioners against the parties pointed to alleged connections to Hamas and contradictory statements by party leaders. Ra'am and The Joint List deny these allegations, with Ra'am highlighting its condemnation of the October 7 attacks and efforts for hostage release. The rights organization Adalah, representing the parties, called the CEC's process illegitimate. The Supreme Court will ultimately decide on the ban, with a representative from the court chairing the CEC. Historically, the Supreme Court has overturned similar bans, with only one disqualification upheld since 1985. The political context has shifted following the October 7 attacks, with some arguing that past statements should be viewed more seriously. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party backed the ban, stating there is no place for those who harm IDF soldiers or do not condemn Hamas. Centrist politicians have expressed divided opinions, with some supporting specific disqualifications but questioning the exclusion of entire lists. The Attorney General's office reportedly found insufficient evidence to ban Ra'am and The Joint List but supported the ban of Sami Abu Shehadeh.

Our take

The Central Elections Committee turned its own meeting into a dickhead parade by voting 18 to 5 to erase Ra'am and the Joint List even after the Attorney General's office said there was not enough evidence to justify banning the parties themselves. Only one individual disqualification got the green light from the AG, yet the full list wipe went through anyway like the report was printed on ass-wipe.

That same committee is chaired by a Supreme Court representative who knows the court has overturned every comparable ban except one since 1985. The members still staged the 18-5 performance, then tossed the whole mess upstairs for the chair's colleagues to clean. It is the political equivalent of shitting the bed in front of your mother and demanding she fix it before breakfast.

Ra'am had already condemned the October 7 attacks and worked on hostage releases, facts the petitioners ignored while waving alleged Hamas links the parties deny. The committee treated those documented condemnations as optional scenery and banned the lists anyway, proving the Knesset rule against denying Israel's Jewish and democratic character was just the excuse they needed to manufacture an empty ballot.

Likud backed the stunt with the usual line about no place for anyone who harms soldiers or skips Hamas condemnation. The Attorney General's own findings made that line look like pure theater, yet the centrists who split on single names versus full lists still let the vote pass. Adalah called the process illegitimate on the spot, but the committee kept counting hands like legitimacy was a numbers game.

Now the Supreme Court gets another pile of appeals it has already shown it will mostly reject. The CEC knew the precedent when it voted. It chose the 18-5 spectacle anyway, leaving Arab voters staring at blank seats while the same politicians who engineered the ban pretend the move protects anything except their own petty display.
