Canada, Spooked by Its Own Lawn, Begs Europe for a Vague Blanket Fort

Prime Minister Mark Carney, rattled by the monster under the bed in Washington, proposes becoming the EU's first-ever 'associate member,' a title with all the binding power of a pinky swear.

The facts

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Thursday, September 17, 2026, that he embraces the prospect of Canada becoming the European Union's first associate member. Speaking to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, Carney stated that closer ties with the continent would ensure no single country could control Canada's markets or undermine its sovereignty. He welcomed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposal, which was unveiled the previous day, though Carney acknowledged that the specifics of "associate membership" are yet to be defined. Carney outlined his vision for deeper integration across trade, defense, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, energy, space, research, and financial services to enhance mutual resilience against economic and geopolitical pressures. He clarified that Canada is not pursuing full EU membership. The proposal comes amid increasing economic and political friction between Canada and the United States under President Trump, whose tariffs and demands have pushed Ottawa to seek stronger ties with Europe. Carney will host EU leaders for a summit in Montreal on October 29-30 to discuss the proposed new relationship further. The Associated Press reported on the developments.

Our take

In a masterclass of diplomatic vagueness born from sheer terror, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has flung himself at the European Union, begging for a new, undefined category of friendship called "associate membership." The desperate shit stood in Strasbourg and claimed this phantom status would protect Canada's sovereignty, which is like saying you'll protect your virginity by getting a prom date with an entire football team. His logic is a perfect ouroboros of pathetic: to avoid being bossed around by one country, he wants to legally entangle his nation with twenty-seven others on a different continent. This isn't statecraft; it's the geopolitical equivalent of a kid hearing a noise in the basement and asking his older, more organized neighbors if he can maybe sleep on their porch.

The vision Carney outlined is a sad, scattershot buffet of every policy area known to man - trade, defense, minerals, AI, energy, space, research, and financial services. It's the foreign policy equivalent of a lonely-hearts ad that reads, ISO: Bulwark. Must enjoy long walks, strategic resilience, and not being Trump. My hobbies include not having my markets controlled. He was quick to specify Canada isn't seeking "full membership," which translates to, We want all the benefits of your clubhouse without having to follow any of your rules or eat your weird cheese. This is a plea for a geopolitical security blanket, a fuzzy, undefined concept to hide under when the big, bad orange noise from the south gets too loud.

The entire fucking farce is a direct product of the rancid bullshit emanating from the United States, where President Trump's tariffs and demands have turned Canada's most important relationship into a daily hostage negotiation. Carney's response isn't a strategic recalibration; it's a panic-induced reach for the nearest adult. He's trying to replace a volatile, abusive partnership with a stable, boring one, even if the stable one hasn't agreed to the terms and hasn't even invented the relationship category he's asking for. He's proposing a continental throuple where Canada gets to hold Brussels's hand for emotional support while technically still sharing a bed with Washington.

Now, Carney will host EU leaders in Montreal for a summit, a meeting that will have all the substance of a group therapy session for people who haven't decided why they're there. The sole agenda item will be attempting to define the meaningless phrase "associate member," a term with less concrete shape than a cloud. Will it mean Canada gets a special badge? A newsletter? The right to attend meetings where it has no vote? This is policy-making as pure theater, a performance designed to make it look like Canada is doing something - anything - other than standing alone in the dark, listening to its neighbor smash plates. Carney isn't building a new future; he's trying to rent a bigger, older bodyguard with nicer manners, and he's willing to pay in promises he hasn't written yet.
