The facts
Brazil's 2026 presidential election is set for Sunday, with incumbent left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a near tie with Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro. Polls suggest the first round of voting may lead to a runoff election on October 25. Lula, seeking a fourth non-consecutive term, has campaigned on his Workers' Party platform of welfare programs and income redistribution, vowing to 'defeat the far right' and framing the election as a choice between 'democracy and sovereignty' and 'barbarism and corruption.' Flavio Bolsonaro, representing the right-wing populist movement, has focused on hardline security policies and tax cuts, criticizing Lula's handling of the economy. He has pledged to pardon his father, Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a sentence in prison for attempting a coup after losing the 2022 election to Lula. Recent polls from Quaest, cited by Reuters, show Lula with 46% and Flavio Bolsonaro with 45% for the first round, and a potential 42% for Lula versus 44% for Bolsonaro in a runoff. Both candidates have engaged in bitter campaigning, utilizing social media extensively. Flavio Bolsonaro has stated he is 'more moderate' than his father but considers him a 'compass' and 'point of reference.' Policies similar between the two Bolsonaros include relaxed gun control and skepticism regarding human-caused climate change. Jair Bolsonaro is also under investigation for alleged corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion.
Our take
This isn’t a political contest; it’s a national custody battle where the main campaign promise is to spring daddy from the clink. Flavio Bolsonaro is running for president so he can use executive power as a get-out-of-jail-free card for his coup-plotting dad, who’s currently serving a sentence for trying to overthrow the government. What a loving son. His entire platform is ‘Tax cuts, more guns, and freeing the old man.’ What a prick. Lula, for his part, is campaigning on the thrilling promise of being Not A Bolsonaro, which, given the competition, is apparently enough to get you to a statistical tie. His big pitch is ‘democracy and sovereignty’ versus ‘barbarism and corruption,’ which is a fancy way of saying ‘please don’t elect the guy whose family business is treason.’ The polls show them neck and neck, which means nearly half the country is cool with a president whose first official act would be a presidential pardon for a convicted insurrectionist. What the fuck is wrong with people? Flavio claims he’s ‘more moderate’ than his fascist father, but also says the jailed seditionist is his ‘compass.’ A compass that only points to prison, apparently. Their shared policies include letting every asshole with a hard-on own a gun and pretending climate change is a fairy tale. It’s a platform built for a country that wants to shoot the rainforest while it burns. The whole shitshow is a perfect metaphor for Brazilian politics: a choice between a leftist who’s been around since dirt was invented and a right-wing shithead whose entire political identity is being a daddy’s boy with a pardon pen. The runoff is set for late October, just in time to turn the election into a horror show where the monster might win because he promises to unlock the other monster’s cage. What a pathetic, stupid, corrupt circus.
