Barclays Caught With Its Dick in the Derivatives Cookie Jar

The Bank of England is reportedly checking if the banking giant made its risky private credit loans look like less of a shitstorm by shoving them into the wrong fucking drawer.

The facts

The Bank of England's Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) has begun reviewing Barclays' handling of loans linked to the private credit sector, according to the Financial Times. The review was initiated this year after a Barclays insider raised concerns that total-return swaps, used to finance loans to private credit firms, may have been recorded in the wrong portfolio. This misclassification could have made the loans appear less risky, potentially reducing the capital Barclays was required to hold and boosting its reported profits. Barclays has stated that its accounting treatment of these derivatives complies with both accounting and regulatory capital requirements, asserting that the conditions were met and supported by appropriate governance. The bank disclosed its total exposure to the private credit sector is approximately £15 billion, with the relevant derivatives accounting for £300 million of that total. The Bank of England declined to comment on the matter. Shares in Barclays fell 3.5% on Monday amid the report. The PRA's new head, Katharine Braddick, is recused from matters involving Barclays until the end of 2026 due to her previous role at the bank.

Our take

Oh, for fuck's sake. Barclays, you absolute fucking prick of a bank, are we really doing this again? The Bank of England's regulators have apparently had to put down their fucking tea and start digging because some poor bastard inside your hallowed halls finally squealed that you've been playing hide-and-seek with your dodgiest loans. The game? Taking loans to private credit firms, wrapping them up in fancy 'total-return swaps', and then, in a move of pure accounting cowardice, allegedly tucking them into the wrong fucking portfolio to make them look less risky. It's the financial equivalent of a toddler shoving their broccoli under the mashed potatoes and declaring the plate clean.

What's the prize for this little sleight of hand? Well, you get to hold less capital against these potential financial IEDs, which conveniently makes your profits look fatter and your shareholders less likely to shit themselves. It's a classic grifter's move: make the dangerous thing look safe so you can pocket the difference and hope no one notices the ticking. Barclays, of course, is already spewing the standard corporate bullshit, claiming everything is tickety-fucking-boo, compliant, and blessed by 'appropriate governance'. They always say that right up until the moment the regulators find the fucking bodies.

The sheer, cuntish audacity is in the numbers. The bank admits it has a whopping 15 billion quid in exposure to the private credit sector, a notoriously murky and risky corner of finance. But the little derivatives they're being investigated over? Just 300 million of that. It's the financial version of a mob boss getting busted for a parking ticket while a trunk full of corpses is in the car. They're sweating the small, allegedly misclassified shit because that's where the capital requirement scam lives. And the market isn't buying their act for a second - shares tanked 3.5%, because investors aren't total morons.

And the cherry on this shit sundae? The PRA's new boss, Katharine Braddick, can't even touch this mess because she used to work at Barclays. So the very institution meant to police this bullshit has its top cop benched, watching from the sidelines while her old mates potentially cooked the books. It's a perfect, piss-taking farce. The whole system is a clown car full of conflicted, self-important dickheads in suits, and Barclays is currently driving it straight into a regulatory ditch. Again.

The VA Wrote Down That Late Surgery Packs Could Cancel Veterans' Surgeries, Then Said Getting Them Faster Had "no value"

The Court of Federal Claims just ordered the VA to redo its $98.5 million sterile-procedure-pack solicitation. The agency shopped by lowest price technically acceptable, wrote into its own acquisition plan that late packs could delay or cancel surgeries, and then told the court a faster delivery plan was worth "no value" to it. Senior Judge Loren A. Smith was not buying it.
