Bärbel Bas quits, calls coalition partners a bunch of backstabbing pricks on her way out

The Labor Minister's resignation over 'public attacks' from her own government allies exposes a ruling coalition so dysfunctional it's actively shitting on its own members while the country waits for basic fucking governance.

The facts

Bärbel Bas announced her resignation as Labor Minister and co-chair of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), citing the death of her stepdaughter and "public attacks against me - unfortunately, including some from within the ranks of our coalition partner." The resignation comes as the coalition government awaits key legislative proposals from the Ministry of Labor, particularly concerning pension system reforms. Christian von Stetten of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group had previously criticized Bas for blocking needed reforms. CDU Economy Minister Katherina Reiche also demanded prompt action on pension reform. SPD co-leader Lars Klingbeil called the attacks on Bas "disgraceful" and warned of a poisoned political discourse. The SPD leadership will meet to elect new leadership in December or January. Alexander Schweitzer is set to succeed Bas as Federal Minister of Labor. Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed confidence in Schweitzer and refuted Bas's accusations, stating he advised her to take time for grief. Mistrust between coalition partners has increased amid low poll numbers and disputes over reforms. The CDU has also faced internal challenges, with a recent historic election defeat. The coalition partners are aware that early elections could benefit the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Our take

Well, look at that. The grown-ups in Germany's grand coalition government have managed to drive one of their own top ministers out the door with such a relentless torrent of petty, public bullshit that she'd rather quit than keep showing up to work with these absolute cunts. Bärbel Bas didn't just resign; she threw a grenade on the way out, explicitly blaming 'public attacks' from within her coalition partner's ranks. That's the political equivalent of flipping the double bird while your so-called allies are still trying to stab you in the back. What a pathetic, pissing-contest way to run a country.

Let's be clear about what these geniuses were attacking her over: actually doing her fucking job. The Ministry of Labor had key legislative proposals in the works, including the not-exactly-minor issue of pension reform. But instead of, oh, I don't know, having a civilized discussion behind closed doors, CDU/CSU dickheads like Christian von Stetten took to the public square to whine that Bas was 'blocking' reforms. Economy Minister Katherina Reiche from the same crew then piled on, demanding 'prompt action.' It's the political strategy of a spoiled toddler: scream loudly in the supermarket until you get what you want, consequences for governing be damned.

The sheer, staggering vanity of it all is breathtaking. Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the head clown of this circus, had the gall to 'refute' Bas's accusations after she left, claiming he advised her to take time to grieve her stepdaughter. Right. Because nothing says 'I support you in your time of loss' like letting your party's attack dogs publicly maul her professional competence while she's dealing with a family tragedy. What a compassionate bastard. His expression of 'confidence' in the new guy, Alexander Schweitzer, rings about as hollow as a fucking drum. He'll be next in line for the public flogging the second he doesn't bend to CDU whims.

SPD co-leader Lars Klingbeil called the attacks 'disgraceful' and warned of a poisoned discourse. No shit, Sherlock. The discourse isn't just poisoned; it's a fucking toxic waste dump fueled by mutual mistrust, historic election defeats for the CDU, and the collective, pants-shitting terror that if they trigger an early election, the far-right AfD might clean their clocks. So instead of governing, they've chosen to cannibalize themselves in slow motion, ensuring nothing gets done while they all posture and snipe. They're not a government; they're a group therapy session for narcissists who forgot to hire a therapist. The only reform they've successfully implemented is turning the cabinet table into a fucking hunger games arena.
