Balochistan Bandits Discover the Hard Way That 'Cash and Carry' Means the Army Carries You Out in Bags

After militants set up an overnight tollbooth to kidnap, extort, and steal vehicles, Pakistani security forces arrived to conduct a violent liquidation sale, killing five, freeing 23, and repossessing a small fleet.

The facts

The Associated Press reported that Pakistani security forces killed five militants and freed 23 hostages in an operation near Kalat in Balochistan on Sunday, according to the military. The militants had established an illegal checkpoint overnight into Saturday, stopping vehicles to abduct people for ransom, extort money and seize vehicles. Pakistan’s military said the men belonged to “Fitna al-Hindustan,” a label the government uses for the outlawed separatist Baloch Liberation Army and other groups operating in Balochistan; India has denied Pakistani accusations that it sponsors militancy there. Forces recovered six trucks, three buses and two cars, along with weapons, ammunition and explosives. The military reported no casualties among security forces or abductees and said troops were searching nearby areas for other militants. The operation followed a statement by Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti ruling out negotiations with insurgents and pledging continued security operations. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the operation and said counterterrorism efforts would continue. Balochistan has a long-running separatist insurgency, and AP said violence has persisted despite authorities’ claims that it has been quelled.

Our take

What a spectacularly stupid fucking business plan. While actual separatist movements might dream of flags and statehood, the geniuses behind this operation apparently dreamt of becoming the world's most violent and incompetent repo men. They didn't launch an assault on a garrison or plant a bomb at a government building. No, these assholes decided their path to liberation was to stand by a road all night, waving down trucks and buses to shake the occupants for cash and car keys. It’s a militant strategy so braindead it makes piracy look like a sophisticated hedge fund. They weren't freedom fighters; they were highwaymen with a branding problem, and the Pakistani army was the very pissed-off manager coming to shut down their pop-up shop.

The government, with the dry humor of a bureaucrat filling out a death certificate, labeled these entrepreneurial fuck-ups as belonging to "Fitna al-Hindustan." That's not a group; it's a filing cabinet term for every annoying separatist pain in the ass they can't be bothered to individually name, like calling a swarm of mosquitos The Buzzing Nuisance Collective. It's the official way of saying, These pricks again. And while Pakistan points the finger at India for sponsoring this shit, India just denies it, turning a violent insurgency into a he-said-she-said argument over who left the gate open for the rabid dogs. The only undeniable sponsorship here was from the poor bastards in the six trucks, three buses, and two cars who got a gun pointed at them and were forced to donate their rides to the cause.

The recovery list from the raid is a perfect indictment of their ambitions. This wasn't a cache of revolutionary pamphlets or maps of strategic targets. It was a fucking motor pool. They amassed a parking lot. Alongside the vehicles, they had weapons and explosives, which suggests they at least understood the basic principle that stealing a bus is easier when you have a grenade, but it completely misses the point that stealing a bus is a shitty goal for an insurgency. The army, showing the efficiency of a professional moving company, repossessed every last vehicle and left five of the thieves dead on the pavement, a zero-percent financing plan with terminal consequences.

And the timing is beautifully pathetic. This whole shitshow went down right after Balochistan's chief minister, Sarfraz Bugti, stood up and declared there would be no more negotiations with insurgents, just more operations. So the militants, in a stunning display of defiance, responded by... setting up a roadside stick-up. The prime minister then praised the counterterrorism effort, which is like congratulating a pest control company for successfully fumigating a single, very obvious rat that was trying to steal groceries from your driveway. This is the reality of Balochistan's long-running insurgency: the government claims it's quelled, and it just keeps popping up in dumber, more venal forms. The only liberation achieved in this operation was liberating those 23 hostages from a gang of greedy dickheads who thought revolution was a synonym for armed carjacking.
