Ballon d’Or Website Prematurely Ejaculates Five Different Winners

The award's official site posted a full victory article for Harry Kane and four other nominees hours before the ceremony, turning a prestigious night into a digital shitshow of pre-written fantasies.

The facts

On Monday at about 17:15 GMT, the official Ballon d’Or website posted an article titled Harry Kane wins the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The piece went live several hours before the award ceremony at London’s Palladium Theatre. BBC Sport discovered that similar pre‑written articles had also been published for other nominees, including Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Alexia Putellas and Ewa Pajor. A Ballon d’Or spokesperson told BBC Sport that the articles were prepared for all nominees and should not be taken as an indication of the final results. The articles about Kane and Mbappé were removed from the site shortly before 17:40 BST. The premature posts sparked online confusion about whether the winner had been leaked.

Our take

What a fucking shambles. The absolute clowns running the Ballon d’Or website managed to publicly jizz out five different ‘winner’ articles before the actual ceremony even started. They didn't just leak one result; they had a full fucking bukkake of premature congratulations ready to go for Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, and three others, like a horny teenager who can't decide which fantasy to finish with. The site became a live feed of their pathetic contingency planning, a digital trophy case where every nominee got to be champion for about twenty-five minutes. It’s the administrative equivalent of shouting ‘I’M COMING!’ in a crowded theatre while still fully clothed.

Their spokesperson’s excuse - that the articles were prepared for all nominees - is the kind of bullshit you’d expect from a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Of course they were prepared, you useless dickheads. The whole point is you don’t fucking PUBLISH them. You keep that sad folder of ‘just in case’ wank material locked in a private tab, not blasted across the official website for the entire sport to see. This isn't a simple oopsie; it's a catastrophic failure of the most basic digital hygiene, revealing an organisation so incompetent it can't even manage a scheduled post without spraying its load all over the internet.

Think about the sheer, staggering vanity of it. Some prick in their comms department had to write five distinct articles, each one lovingly detailing a fictional victory, each one a little story about how this particular player had finally reached the pinnacle. They crafted this whole library of alternate realities, these little trophies of text, and then some asshole with publish permissions just opened the floodgates. It turns the Ballon d’Or from a celebration of excellence into a participation trophy where everyone wins, as long as you’re on the shortlist and their web team has had too much coffee.

The real joke is the timing. They pulled the Kane and Mbappé articles down after about 25 minutes, which is roughly the same amount of time it takes to realise you’ve made a terrible, shameful mistake and frantically try to clean it up. But the damage was done. For a solid half-hour, the football world got to watch the award’s own website have a very public, very messy brain fart, proving that the guardians of football’s most prestigious individual prize have the operational discipline of a hungover student trying to submit an essay after deadline. They turned what should be a night of glamour into a technical rehearsal where everyone saw the fucking script. The only thing they awarded was a masterclass in being a total cunt.
