Texas star quarterback Arch Manning has apologized after joking about an AI-generated video that depicted Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian slapping ESPN college football reporter Holly Rowe after a recent game. Manning was asked at a press conference on Monday about social media reactions to the Longhorns’ win over No 1 Ohio State. Rowe had attempted a postgame interview with Sarkisian, but the coach interrupted her and yelled Texas slogans before walking off. Manning commented on the AI edit of the incident, calling it ‘hilarious’ and eliciting laughter. On Tuesday, Manning issued an apology on his Instagram story, stating his words were ‘hurtful to a lot of people’ and that he ‘need[s] to do better.’ He specifically apologized to Holly Rowe, expressing respect for her and appreciation for her grace. Rowe responded on Instagram, accepting his apology and stating they would ‘move forward with respect and kindness.’ Evan Vieth, the reporter who asked Manning the question, also apologized for his initial reaction to Manning’s comment. Rowe has over two decades of experience as a sideline reporter for ESPN and has received multiple accolades for her work. A Texas spokesperson indicated that ESPN’s technical difficulties played a role in Sarkisian’s response to Rowe.

Arch Manning, the renowned Texas quarterback and philosopher of our times, has finally located the moral high ground. It was right next to the spot where he’d just finished pissing himself laughing at a deepfake of his own coach backhanding a respected ESPN reporter across the face. The digital slap heard 'round the press conference was, in his professional assessment, 'hilarious.' A room full of grown adults agreed, because nothing says 'journalistic integrity' like giggling at simulated workplace violence against a woman who’s been doing the job since before this kid was shitting in diapers. His apology tour hit Instagram Stories faster than a blitzing linebacker, where he admitted there’s 'nothing funny about it' and that he 'need[s] to do better.' No shit, Arch. The bar is in the fucking basement, and you brought a shovel. It’s the classic Manning two-minute drill: first, the audible into a joke about a woman getting slapped, then the hurry-up offense to post a remorseful note before the sponsors check their mentions. The reporter who asked the question also apologized for calling Manning’s reaction 'gold,' which is the real meta-joke here: a sports media ecosystem so desperate for content it will treat a quarterback’s shitty, off-the-cuff remark as a precious metal, then collectively shit a brick when it turns out to be a turd. The whole circus orbits a coach who, in reality, just screamed some brain-dead slogans and stormed off because of 'technical difficulties.' But why let a boring, real-life display of petulance get in the way of a good, fake assault? The real victory here is that everyone gets to feel righteous. Arch gets to be contrite, Holly Rowe gets to be magnanimous, and the rest of us get to watch a multimillion-dollar sports machine stumble over its own dick because a 22-year-old thought a CGI crime was comedy.
