Andy Burnham's Cosy Chat with Football's Finest Fraudster

The mayor of Greater Manchester had a formal sit-down with Man City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak in 2021, just years after the club was cooking the books with hundreds of millions in 'sham' contracts. Transparency? About as clear as a fucking Etihad fog.

The facts

Prime Minister Andy Burnham had one formal meeting with Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak while serving as mayor of Greater Manchester, according to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA). The meeting occurred in October 2021 at the UK Government's Global Investment Summit, arranged by the Department for International Trade. Burnham also met Al Mubarak informally in September 2019 at a Manchester City home fixture. These details emerged following criticism of Burnham's comments after Manchester City was found guilty of numerous Premier League financial rule breaches. A GMCA spokesperson stated that Burnham had been a guest at City matches on a few occasions, with hospitality declared appropriately. The GMCA also noted that representatives from Greater Manchester sporting clubs, including Manchester United and Lancashire County Cricket Club, routinely joined business delegations on international visits during Burnham's tenure. Shadow sports minister Louie French urged Burnham to provide full transparency regarding his relationship with City Football Group, expressing concern over his public statements. An independent commission found City breached financial rules over a nine-year period, between 2009 and 2018, by creating 'sham' contracts to channel over £830m into football operations. City has appealed the verdict.

Our take

So let's get this straight. Andy Burnham, the self-styled people's mayor, the bloke who's supposed to be above the grubby spectacle of professional sport, is having formal fucking meetings with the chairman of a football club that was, at that very moment, appealing a verdict for the most spectacular financial fraud in Premier League history. Not a quick handshake, not a wave from the stands - a proper, arranged, government-trade-summit meeting with Khaldoon Al Mubarak. This isn't a coincidence; it's a choice, you dickhead. You don't just bump into the architect of an 830-million-pound sham contract scheme at the biscuit table. You get pencilled in.

And what's the pathetic excuse? That it was at a Global Investment Summit arranged by the Department for International Trade. Brilliant. So the mayor's office is using taxpayer-funded trade missions to facilitate a chinwag with a man whose business model was, according to an independent commission, a nine-year-long exercise in creative accounting so brazen it makes a fucking child's lemonade stand look like the Bank of England. They were channeling money through fake contracts, for fuck's sake. What was the investment pitch? 'Khaldoon, old mate, any tips on how to make the Metrolink's finances look healthier? We're thinking of inventing a ghost tram driver and paying him a few million.'

The GMCA spokesperson's statement is a masterpiece of cowardly bullshit. He's been a guest at matches, they say, with hospitality 'declared appropriately'. Oh, well that's fucking alright then. As long as the free prawn sandwiches and corporate seats are logged on a form somewhere, it's totally cool for the region's top elected official to be sucking up to a sporting institution built on financial lies. The spokesperson then, in a truly desperate pivot, starts banging on about how Manchester United and Lancashire Cricket Club also get invites on trips. What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Did an independent commission just find Manchester United guilty of a decade of systematic financial cheating? No. This is pure, unadulterated whataboutism to cover the mayor's arse.

Then we have Shadow Sports Minister Louie French, a man whose very name sounds like a rejected Bond villain, calling for 'full transparency'. He's right, but it's too late. The transparency is already here. It shows a mayor happy to be wined and dined by a club mired in the deepest shit imaginable, and then to publicly comment on their case as if he's some neutral observer. The meeting was in October 2021. The charges, the years of alleged breaches, were public knowledge. Burnham knew exactly who he was sharing a room with. He just didn't think it was a problem, or worse, he thought the connection was useful. That's the real scandal. Not the declared hospitality, but the staggering lack of judgement and the fucking stench of hypocrisy. He's not a mayor; he's a fanboy with a budget, getting his picture taken with the dodgiest chairman in the game while the rest of us are supposed to believe he's fighting for the little guy. What an absolute prick.
