The facts
University lecture halls in Tirana have been empty for days as students boycott classes and take to the streets, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has led the country since 2013. The protests, part of the broader anti‑government movement dubbed the “Flamingo Revolution,” began in late May in response to a multimillion‑euro tourism development linked to Jared Kushner in the protected coastal area of Zvernec. Over the past three days, clashes have seen bins, businesses, buildings and banks set ablaze. Police report 152 arrests, 324 people under investigation, and 71 officers injured. Protesters cite poor university conditions, high tuition, low wages – exemplified by a student who earns €540 a month and cannot afford city housing – and broader corruption as drivers of their demand for Rama’s resignation. Rama has refused to step down, saying governments change through elections, and has blamed “foreign hands” for trying to block Albania’s EU accession. Opposition leader Sali Berisha rejected those accusations, while civil‑society activist Rigels Xhemollari called the protests a culmination of months of peaceful demonstrations.
Our take
Edi Rama is the kind of political dickhead who thinks a decade in power means you own the place. You don't. You just get to be the head clown in the circus when the animals finally revolt. And holy shit, are they revolting. The whole fucking university system has emptied out because students looked at their €540-a-month paychecks, their sky-high rents, and their crumbling lecture halls and decided, 'Fuck this, let's set a bank on fire instead.' That's not a protest, that's a cost-benefit analysis. Why pay tuition to learn about an economy that's fucked you over when you can get a free, hands-on lesson in urban renewal with a fucking Molotov cocktail?
And where did this 'Flamingo Revolution' start? With a multimillion-euro tourism project for Jared Kushner on a protected coast. Of course it did. Because when your population is struggling to afford a shoebox, the perfect solution is obviously to sell a chunk of your country to a rich American cunt so he can build a hotel for other rich cunts. It's a masterclass in priorities: fuck the students, fuck the workers, but for God's sake, don't fuck with Jared's beachfront view. Rama must think Albanians are flamingos themselves – pretty, pink, and just standing around on one leg waiting for instructions. Turns out they're more like pissed-off geese with a taste for arson.
Then we get to the government's response, which is a fucking masterpiece of cowardice and bullshit. Bins are burning, buildings are torched, 71 cops are nursing their wounds, and 324 people are under investigation. And what does our brave leader do? He hides behind the lectern and blames 'foreign hands' for trying to block EU accession. Foreign hands, Edi? You absolute cunt. The only foreign hand your students give a shit about is the one holding the €540 they earn every month before it's snatched away by rent. They're not worried about Brussels; they're worried about being able to take a piss in a bathroom that isn't falling apart. Blaming outsiders is the last refuge of a politician whose own people have finally figured out he's full of shit.
And let's talk about his brilliant political theory: governments change through elections, not protests. No shit, Sherlock. But when your election was a decade ago and you've spent the time since turning the country into a grifter's paradise where a student can't afford a roof, maybe the people get a little impatient. They're not asking for a fucking coup; they're asking you to stop being such a greedy, tone-deaf asshole. Refusing to resign while your capital burns is the political equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and shouting 'LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE SOUND OF MY OWN SELF-IMPORTANCE.' It's a pathetic, vain performance from a man who clearly thinks he's the star of the show. He's not. He's the guy about to get pelted with rotten fruit.
The numbers tell the real story: 152 arrests, 324 investigations. That's not a protest; that's a fucking occupation. The police are tallying bodies while Rama is tallying excuses. He's like a landlord watching his property burn down and complaining that the fire is making the neighborhood look bad. The 'culmination of months of peaceful demonstrations,' as one activist called it, has now culminated in a giant 'FUCK YOU' written in smoke across Tirana. And the only thing dumber than Rama's response is the original idea that sparked it all: that a Kushner resort was what Albania needed. This whole mess is a perfect shit-storm of vanity, greed, and staggering incompetence, and the prime minister is standing in the middle of it with an umbrella made of his own bullshit, wondering why he's still getting wet.
